Marathon Equipment
Looking Cool Doesn’t Make you Faster

Some marathon equipment makes training easier, but some gadgets just look cool. In this case, function is better than form. Of course, having both is better.

Running equipment comes in all different shapes and sizes so I’ve categorized them by need, i.e. “you need this,” “it could help,” and “it just looks cool.” Of course, looking cool is great, but why waste time and money on things that won’t get you to the finish line?

You Need This
Running water bottles are definitely a must – especially on long runs when you need extra fluid on hand every few miles. Some attach to your hand, some to your back and some to your hips. Check these bottles out.

I could not live without my iPod nano. It provided entertainment for me via my favorite podcast or playlist. More importantly, I had the Nike Plus pedometer setup, so it was an easy way to track my mileage and pace. It even shots out words of encouragement from famous athletes like Lance Armstrong.

Since I had my iPod, I decided not to wear a gps running watch. However, those of you who don’t like running to music or don’t have this setup, a watch can be very handy.

It Could Help
Running lights aren’t necessary as I hope you’ll be running in the morning light hours. If you do find yourself running at night a lot, this would probably be useful.

If your have really sensitive eyes, then wearing a pair of sun glasses couldn’t hurt. I wore a pair every once in awhile when I knew I’d be running into the sun on some of my longer runs. They can be clunky and get in your way though. Opt for a light frame.

It Just Looks Cool
I submit to you that running with a heart rate monitor only looks cool. Take it from a first-time marathoner who tried it for about a week I soon realized it was more trouble than it was worth. It was just a piece of marathon equipment that only made me look like I knew what I was doing. However, a lot of runners find these useful once they have a few races under their belt.
