Marathon Base Building is Essential
Marathon base building is where I had to start. After a few weeks, I was ready for the longer runs and you will be too!
I named this Web site “Finish First Marathon” because if you follow all the advice within the site you can and WILL become a marathoner. Who knows, maybe you’ll start a Web site on Boston marathon training! But first, baby steps… A lot of them! You will start out with four weeks of pre-marathon training. You’ll increase your total mileage by 3 miles each week. Here’s a snapshot of what it looks like.
| Week | Mon | Tue | Wed | Thu | Fri | Sat | Sun |
| 1 | rest | 1 | 1.5 | 1.5 | rest | 2 | cross | | 2 | rest | 2 | 2 | 2 | rest | 3 | cross | | 3 | rest | 3 | 2 | 3 | rest | 4 | cross | | 4 | rest | 4 | 3 | 3 | rest | 5 | cross |
Basically, you start out with a few weeks of shorter running workouts to build up your stamina and endurance for the longer runs. That’s about it. The 30-minute cross-training workout can be biking, walking, nice jog or something low impact.
